16: The Musical by Saskatoon’s Live Fully Productions is an achievement of strong lyrics, engaging performances and a vibrant, enthralling production that not only feels polished but could easily being mistaken for a nationally touring production.

The production is written by Elisabeth Foucault with lyrics by Paulina Salisbury and directed by Lorna Batycki.

It stars Jonah Mase (Remi), Kylen Rioux 9nevada), Bolu Azonobi (Sol), Izzy Adams (Kim), Kai Batycki (Connor), Paulina Salisbury (London) and Siyam Hassan (Nyx). It features an ensemble including Cam Leverick, Kate Stensrud, Lex Barry, Laren Krowchuk, P.B. Brandon, Rylie Coller, Sadie Gryba and Sydney Kelln.

It is the performances and musical numbers that catapult the production into unforgettable territory.

The characters all follow the traditional high school archetypes ranging from Connor the jock, Remi, the new kid loner, Nevada, labeled the promiscuous “hot girl”, Sol, the foreign student, London, the theatre kid, Kim, the anxious activist and Nyx, the rebel “bad boy”.

The musical numbers are relevant, sharp, quirky and self aware from “16”, “Creep”, “Mess”, “Flame” and “Life” that are adept at segueing from conversations into song without it being jarring or forced.

Salisbury has a gift at threading a contemporary vibe anchored with the entertaining personalities that transform the musical into something special.

Mase is widely entertaining as the carefree new kid, Remy that keeps the production grounded while maintaining a fun quality.

Rioux takes the clichéd archetype of Nevada and turns it into something memorable with a strong singing voice and snarky cadence.

Azonobi brings a heartfelt earnestness to Sol that resonates a genuine warmth throughout the production.

Adams conveyed a passionate, protective stance as Kim the activist that was quite memorable in her small role.

Kai Batycki radiated a cocky, boastful confidence as Connor that was more playful and socially aloof then as off-putting as it could have been. He also was the production’s choreographer.

Salisbury encapsulates the theatre kid persona as London while showing a vulnerability and relatable side to her overly dramatic character. Salisbury was also the music director.

Hassan brought a salty veneer as bad boy, Nyx, who tries to project a tough exterior to hide his inner vulnerability. Hassan also was the costume designer.

Lorna Batycki projected a confident measured direction that shone through the projection. She also was the production’s stage manager.

Foucault’s script was commanding, thoughtful and self aware including pop culture references such as comparing London to the character of Rachel Berry from the FOX's Glee.

The production was a well oiled machine due to the talented crew including Simon Jasieniuk as music composer and producer, Tim Bratton as dramaturge, Antony Salisbury as music and sound composer, Shaun Bzdel as production manager and technical director, Jorja Greene as lightning designer, Zach Greenhorn as sound designer and videographer and Brady Moore did the production’s set and props design.

16: The Musical is a must see event executing a wondrous cavalcade of musical numbers, catchy soundtrack with clever and witty script with an engaging and captivating cast.

16: The Musical is playing at The Broadway Theatre from August 1-10th 2024 at the Saskatoon Fringe Festival. Tickets can be bought online here, the box office on site or the venue itself.
