Prizm Productions is mounting a revamp in their second iteration of Identity Crisis that premiered two years ago at the Saskatoon Fringe Festival in 2022.
The production is aptly named as just as its title suggests about identity. This one woman show is a journey of self discovery and meaning.
The production is a darkly comic existential jaunt that is a myriad of clowning, body movement, physical comedy and audience engagement that utilizes astrology, introspection that culminates into something truly magical and unequivocally unique.
Alyssa Billingsley stars as Gemini, a virtual pet that is malfunctioning while simultaneously battling a loss of identity and purpose.
The strength of the production is how Billingsley effortlessly connects and engages with the audience. Billingsley is so charming and mesmerizing that by mixing genres and styles from singing, dancing and clowning that it becomes a delightful yet intriguing theme park ride that is both immersive yet accessible.
The star attraction is Billingsley herself who exudes a childlike sense of wonder and radiates infectious energy that it’s magnetic.
Additionally, Nicole de Gooljer should be acknowledged as stage manager, set design by Les Derksen, music by Sheldon Corbett and Billingsley with additional composition by Nathan Coppens. The costume design by Crispi Lord and Billingsley and lights by Kenn McLeod and Charlie Peters. The dramaturgy was done by Charlie Peters and the production was co-created with John Turner and Kenn McLeod.
This is a production that is a unique spectacle worth the price of admission. Identity Crisis is the reason why experimental theatre and live theatre are an important genre of the theatre pantheon and why it should be supported.
Identity Crisis is playing at the Winnipeg Fringe Festival and the Edmonton Fringe Festival. Tickets can be bought online here for the Winnipeg Fringe or here for the Edmonton Fringe. Ticket's can also be bought at the venue.
